How Long Do Woma Pythons Live?

Woma pythons commonly live 20 to 30 years. They are hardy and entirely captive bred, and the one thing that disproportionately shortens their lives is heat, because they cannot sense it the way other pythons can.

What actually shortens it

Published lifespans describe well-kept animals. The gap between the figure above and what a woma python actually lives is almost entirely husbandry, and these are the levers that matter most.

Burns from unguarded or unregulated heat

The species-specific one, and it matters more here than for almost any other snake. Aspidites lack the heat-sensing labial pits other pythons have, and care guidance warns specifically against heat rocks because a woma may not move off something that is burning it.

Overfeeding

The commonest way a captive snake's life is shortened. Adults stop growing and keep being fed on a growth schedule, and obesity brings organ disease with it. Judge by body condition rather than by appetite, which stays enthusiastic regardless.

A damp enclosure

Womas come from red sand desert. Keepers arriving from ball pythons raise humidity out of habit and cause scale rot and respiratory problems in an arid species.

Common questions

How long do woma pythons live?

Commonly 20 to 30 years in captivity. They are hardy snakes, and because Australia does not export its wildlife the entire pet trade population is captive bred.

What is the biggest risk to a woma python's life?

Thermal burns. The genus Aspidites lacks the heat-sensing labial pits every other python has, and care guidance warns specifically against heat rocks because a woma may not move off a source that is harming it.

Are woma pythons hardy?

Yes, provided the heating is thermostat-controlled and guarded and the enclosure is kept dry. They are arid-habitat animals and do poorly in humid setups.
