Female Russian tortoises reach 5 to 8 inches of shell and males 4 to 6, making them among the smallest popular tortoises. They take 8 to 12 years to get there, and pushing that faster causes pyramiding.

Getting there

Slow: adult size in 8 to 12 years

Deliberately slow, and it should stay that way. Fast-grown tortoises pyramid, so pushing growth actively harms the animal.

Females end up larger

5 to 8 inches against 4 to 6 for males.

What that size means in practice

4 by 2 feet indoors for an adult, larger preferred

The commonly published minimum. Outdoor housing is strongly preferred where climate allows, since they are grazers and diggers.

Small enough to house correctly for 50 years

Which is the real argument for them over a sulcata. A commitment this long is only responsible if the housing stays achievable throughout.
