Ball pythons commonly live 20 to 30 years, with well-kept individuals routinely reaching 35 to 40. The oldest documented individual lived 47 years at the Saint Louis Zoo, having arrived there in 1961.

What actually shortens it

Published lifespans describe well-kept animals. The gap between the figure above and what a ball python actually lives is almost entirely husbandry, and these are the levers that matter most.

Obesity

Ball pythons are sedentary ambush predators fed on a schedule most keepers set too generously. Wild ball pythons eat roughly ten meals a year. A captive adult fed weekly is eating five times that, and the fat goes onto the organs before it shows on the body.

Respiratory infection from a sealed enclosure

The standard response to low humidity is to cover the ventilation. That produces stagnant humid air, which is the condition respiratory infections need. Humidity should come from substrate and a large water bowl, with airflow kept intact.

Unregulated heat

A heat mat or bulb without a thermostat can burn through the belly scales. Ball pythons press against warm surfaces and do not reliably move off one that is too hot.

Common questions

How long do ball pythons live?

Commonly 20 to 30 years in captivity, with well-kept individuals routinely reaching 35 to 40 years. This is a multi-decade commitment rather than a starter pet.

What is the oldest ball python on record?

A female at the Saint Louis Zoo that died in 2020 aged 47. She had been at the zoo since 1961, which makes hers one of the best-documented reptile longevity records.

What shortens a ball python's life?

Obesity above all, since they are sedentary animals routinely fed far more often than they would eat in the wild. Respiratory infection from sealed-up enclosures and burns from unregulated heat are the others.

Why do ball pythons live so long?

A slow metabolism, long natural fasting periods and low activity all correlate with longevity across reptiles. In captivity the risk is removing the fasting rather than preserving it.
