How to set up a ball python enclosure
Enclosure
- Adult enclosure
- 4×2×2 ft minimum. PVC enclosures hold humidity better than glass terrariums; serious keepers prefer PVC.
- Hatchling
- 20-gallon long acceptable for the first year. Upgrade by age 2.
- Why size matters
- Older guides recommended small enclosures for ball pythons. Current research supports larger enclosures with enriched setups — the animal thrives.
Heating
- Warm side
- 88-92°F surface at basking point.
- Cool side
- 75-80°F.
- Nighttime
- Can drop to 75°F.
- Heat source
- Overhead radiant heat panel or low-wattage ceramic heat emitter. Plug into a thermostat. Avoid under-tank heaters as the primary source.
- Thermostat
- Herpstat, Inkbird ITC-308, or equivalent dimming thermostat. Critical — never run heating without one.
Humidity (critical)
- Target
- 55-65% baseline, raised to 70-80% during shed.
- How to maintain
- PVC enclosure + large water bowl + substrate that retains moisture (cypress mulch, coconut fiber).
- Humid hide
- Optional. A small enclosed hide with damp sphagnum moss inside.
- Measure
- Digital hygrometer with probe. Stick-on dial hygrometers lie.
Substrate
- Best choices
- Cypress mulch, coconut fiber, aspen shavings.
- Bioactive setup
- Topsoil-coconut fiber mix with springtails and isopods works well.
- Avoid
- Cedar (toxic), pine (mildly toxic), sand (impaction risk).
Lighting
- UVB
- Not strictly required but recommended for long-term welfare. Low-output T5 HO 5.0 across part of the enclosure.
- Day-night cycle
- Provide a daytime light source on a timer (12 hours on, 12 off).
Decor and enrichment
- Hides
- Minimum two — one warm side, one cool side. Both should be enclosed and snug-fitting.
- Climbing branches
- Ball pythons climb occasionally. Provide sturdy branches.
- Water bowl
- Large enough to soak in. Stable so the snake can't tip it.
- Plants
- Artificial or hardy live plants for cover.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a ball python setup cost?
$300-500 itemized: enclosure $150-280, basking lamp + thermostat $80-130, hides and substrate $50, decor $30-50.
Do ball pythons need UVB?
Not strictly required but modern care recommends low-output UVB for long-term welfare. The historical 'no UVB needed' guidance is being revised.
Why is my ball python's enclosure recommended at 4 feet?
Adult ball pythons need real space for thermoregulation and movement. The older 'small enclosure = secure' philosophy has been largely abandoned in modern care.
Can ball pythons live together?
Never. Stress and competition for hides cause feeding refusal and disease.
Do I need a misting system?
Not unless your room is very dry. Manual misting during shed (twice a day for a week) is usually enough.
