Madagascar Giant Day Gecko Care Guide

Is a day gecko right for you?
Day geckos are stunning display animals — bright green with red markings, active during the day, fast and beautiful to watch. Their skin is so delicate it tears from handling, so they're observation animals, not pets you pick up. For a planted vivarium keeper, they're ideal.
Enclosure
Minimum 18" × 18" × 24" tall (45 × 45 × 60 cm). Heavily planted with broad-leaved plants (bromeliads, pothos, dragon plant), bamboo or cork tubes for climbing and shelter.
Temperature
- Basking spot: 92-95°F (33-35°C)
- Ambient: 78-85°F
- Cool: 72-78°F
- Night: 70-75°F
UVB
Required at high output. T5 HO Arcadia 12% or Reptisun 10.0. Diurnal sun-basking species — UVB is non-negotiable.
Humidity
60-80%, cycling. Mist 1-2 times daily. Allow dry-down between cycles. Live plants help.
Diet
Omnivorous. Mix of insects (small crickets, fruit flies, BSFL larvae) and commercial gecko diet (Pangea or Repashy) + occasional fruit (mashed papaya, banana, mango).
Calcium dust insects; multivitamin weekly.
Handling — minimal
Day geckos have extremely fragile skin that tears from handling, leaving scars and exposing the animal to infection. They are display animals. Catch only when necessary (vet, enclosure work) using a cup-and-hand technique, never grabbing.
Common day gecko mistakes
- Handling. Causes skin tears.
- Insufficient UVB. They're diurnal sun-baskers.
- Glass aquarium with screen top. Loses humidity. Use sealed-top enclosure with ventilation strips.
- Pair without sex verification. Two males fight. Verify before introducing.
