How to set up a bearded dragon enclosure
Enclosure
- Adult enclosure
- 48×24×24 inches minimum. Bigger is better — many serious keepers use 72×24×24 or larger. PVC enclosures from Zen Habitats, Custom Cages, or Animal Plastics hold heat better than glass terrariums.
- Hatchling
- 24×18×18 is acceptable for the first 3-6 months. Upgrade as the animal grows.
- Why size matters
- Bearded dragons need real temperature gradient — 100°F basking on one side, 80°F on the other. Small enclosures cannot maintain this gradient.
Lighting (critical)
- UVB bulb
- Arcadia 12% Desert T5 HO or Zoo Med Reptisun 10.0 T5 HO. Linear bulb spanning 2/3 to 3/4 enclosure length. Mount inside the enclosure or above a screen top (UVB does not pass through glass).
- UVB fixture
- Arcadia ProT5 or equivalent. $80-130 one-time purchase.
- Bulb replacement
- Every 6-12 months. Mark the install date on the bulb with a permanent marker.
- Basking lamp
- Separate halogen flood lamp providing direct heat for the basking spot. Plug into a dimming thermostat.
- UV meter (optional but recommended)
- Solarmeter 6.5 to verify UV index at basking surface ($200-250).
Heating
- Basking temperature
- 100-110°F surface temperature at the basking spot. Measure with a digital probe thermometer or infrared temp gun.
- Cool side
- 75-80°F. Allows thermoregulation.
- Nighttime
- Can drop to 65-72°F. No nighttime heat needed.
- Thermostat
- Dimming thermostat for the basking lamp. Brands: Herpstat, Inkbird ITC-308.
Substrate
- Best choices
- Tile (ceramic or slate), reptile carpet (replace regularly), or bioactive substrate with proper drainage.
- Avoid
- Calci-sand (impaction risk), loose sand for juveniles, walnut shell, crushed corncob.
- Bioactive setup
- Topsoil-and-sand mix with springtails and isopods for ongoing waste breakdown. Requires more setup expertise.
Decor and enrichment
- Basking platform
- Slate or branch positioned 12-18 inches from UVB bulb (check manufacturer chart for exact distance).
- Hide
- One hide on the cool side for security.
- Climbing branches
- Bearded dragons climb. Provide angled branches and elevated platforms.
- Plants
- Live edible plants (dandelion, hibiscus) or quality artificial plants.
Feeding setup
- Feeder insect storage
- Dubia roach colony or cricket bin. Gut-load with quality dry food + fresh vegetables.
- Calcium powder
- With D3 — dust insects most feedings.
- Multivitamin
- Once weekly dusting.
- Greens prep
- Daily fresh greens (collard, mustard, turnip; limited kale). Don't rely on iceberg lettuce or spinach.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a complete bearded dragon setup cost?
$500-800 to do it right. Itemized: enclosure $200-350, T5 HO UVB fixture and bulb $80-130, basking lamp and dimming thermostat $80-150, substrate and decor $50-100, calcium and supplements $20.
Can I use a coil UVB bulb to save money?
No. Coil UVB bulbs produce insufficient UVB and are the leading cause of metabolic bone disease in pet bearded dragons. Save up for proper T5 HO equipment.
What's the most important purchase?
Proper T5 HO UVB bulb and fixture. Skimp anywhere else first.
Do I need a misting system?
No. Bearded dragons are desert reptiles and do not need humid environments. Misting can actually cause respiratory infections.
Can I keep two bearded dragons together?
Generally no. They are solitary territorial animals. Cohabitation causes chronic stress and aggression.
