How Long Do Panther Chameleons Live?
Male panther chameleons commonly live 5 to 7 years while females are often published at just 2 to 3. That is one of the widest sex gaps in reptile keeping, and the cause is egg production.

What actually shortens it
Published lifespans describe well-kept animals. The gap between the figure above and what a panther chameleon actually lives is almost entirely husbandry, and these are the levers that matter most.
Egg-binding and follicular stasis in females
Female panther chameleons lay large clutches, commonly 20 to 40 eggs, and they do it repeatedly without ever meeting a male. Each clutch draws heavily on calcium and body reserves, and a female kept warm and fed generously simply produces more of them. That cumulative cost, rather than any single emergency, is why published female figures sit at a fraction of male ones.
Metabolic bone disease
Chameleons sit under their lighting all day and are unusually exposed to getting it wrong in either direction. Too little UVB and calcium gives the classic soft jaw and bowed limbs; too much unshielded output at close range causes eye damage. Bulb distance matters as much as bulb choice.
Dehydration
As with all chameleons, they will not drink standing water. Chronic dehydration and the kidney disease that follows is among the commonest causes of death in captive chameleons.
