What do tiger salamanders eat?

The short answer

Tiger salamanders are terrestrial burrowers with enthusiastic appetites. Earthworms are the staple and cover most of their nutritional needs. Like other sit-and-wait amphibians they overeat readily, and because they feed from a partly buried position they can take substrate along with the meal.

What never to feed

Items in this table are either outright toxic or cause predictable long-term harm. This is the part of the page worth reading twice.

Do not feedWhy
Feeding on loose substrateImpaction risk from substrate taken with prey.
Rodents as a stapleFatty; drives obesity.
Warm enclosuresSuppresses appetite and stresses a cool-climate species.
Wild-caught insectsPesticide, parasite and toxicity risk.
Handling with dry or unwashed handsPermeable skin absorbs oils, salts and residues.

Where good sources disagree

Care sheets do not all say the same thing, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. These are the real points of difference between the sources cited at the foot of this page, and what we think the safe reading is.

How often adults should eat.

Guidance ranges from twice weekly to every second or third day. Individual size and temperature both affect intake. What is consistent is that adults do not need daily feeding, and that they will accept it regardless.

What most tiger salamander feeding advice gets wrong

Earthworms really are the answer.

Keepers often look for something more interesting, and there is no need. Earthworms suit tiger salamanders nutritionally, are readily accepted, are low in fat compared with waxworms or rodents, and are cheap. Insects add variety; worms do the work.

Feed off a dish.

Tiger salamanders strike from a partly buried position and routinely take substrate with the prey. Impaction is a real risk. Offering food with tongs or on a shallow dish costs nothing and removes the problem.

Cool is correct.

These are cool-climate amphibians, and warm enclosures suppress appetite before they cause anything more obvious. A salamander that has gone off food in a warm room is usually telling you about the temperature rather than the menu.

Common questions

What do tiger salamanders eat?

Earthworms are the staple and the best single food for the species, supplemented with dubia roaches and crickets for variety. Waxworms and pinky mice are occasional treats rather than regular foods, since both are high in fat.

How often should I feed a tiger salamander?

Adults roughly two to three times a week, juveniles daily to every other day. They have large appetites and will accept food far more often than they need it, so obesity is a common captive problem.

Can tiger salamanders get impaction?

Yes. They strike at prey from a partly buried position and can swallow substrate along with the meal. Feeding on a shallow dish or with tongs largely removes the risk.
