Humidity in a Reptile Enclosure
Humidity is referenced on almost every care sheet and measured properly on almost none of them. The number that matters is the one where the animal actually sits.
Why one number is misleading
Care sheets give a single percentage because a table needs one cell. Real enclosures have a gradient: drier at the warm end, wetter near the water bowl and the substrate, different again inside a hide. An animal moves through that gradient on purpose. What you are aiming for is a range the animal can choose from, which is why a reading taken at the top corner of the glass tells you very little.
Measure it properly
Put a digital probe at the height the animal occupies, and move it between the warm and cool ends to learn the gradient. Analogue dial gauges, the ones that ship with most starter kits, are the single most common source of a confidently wrong humidity reading. If your numbers look perfect and your animal has stuck shed, suspect the gauge first.
Raising it without causing a respiratory infection
The wrong fix is covering the mesh and letting the enclosure go stagnant. Warm, wet, still air is the condition respiratory infections like. The better levers are a larger water bowl placed over the warm end, a deeper moisture-retentive substrate, live plants, and a humid hide. Misting raises humidity in a spike and drops away quickly; it is a supplement, not a system.
Lowering it
Increase cross-ventilation, move the water bowl away from the heat source, switch to a substrate that does not hold water, and check for a leaking bowl or a dripping condensation point. In a genuinely damp room, a dehumidifier in the room beats fighting it inside the enclosure.
Common questions
What humidity does my reptile need?
It depends on the species and there is no universal figure, which is why it belongs on the species page rather than here. What is universal is how you measure it: a digital probe, placed where the animal actually sits, read across both ends of the enclosure.
Are analogue humidity gauges accurate?
Generally no. The dial gauges included in most starter kits drift and can be wrong by twenty points or more, which is enough to turn a correct setup into a shedding problem. A digital probe costs little and is the single highest-value upgrade in a new setup.
How do I raise humidity without making my reptile sick?
Add water surface area and moisture-holding substrate rather than removing ventilation. Warm, wet and still is the combination that causes respiratory infections. A humid hide gives the animal a damp microclimate without making the whole enclosure a swamp.
Why does my snake have stuck shed if my humidity reading is fine?
Two usual answers. The gauge is wrong, which an analogue dial frequently is. Or the reading is correct for where it sits but not for where the animal sits. Add a humid hide and re-measure at the animal's level before changing anything else.
